Springhill Group: Medicare Dupery Bill Re-brought In

http://tonybricks96.edublogs.org/

U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Miami, has reintroduced legislation that would double the amount of fines and incarceration for people in prison for Medicare fraud/scam. It also creates a new criminal offense punishable with a 10 year minimum sentence for those who intentionally sell or distribute the ID numbers of Medicare beneficiaries.
According to the Springhill Group, the legislation also bars those who have been part of Medicare dupery in the past from billing Medicare if they switch companies. It also facilitates real-time information sharing among law enforcement agencies to aid in uncovering and dismantling Medicare scams.
“South Florida has been known as the epicenter of Medicare dupery for years,” she said. “It is time we took the fight to those who seek to defraud Medicare and prey on our most vulnerable citizens. This bill not only raises the penalties for those who engage in Medicare fraud, but also sets up a pro-active paradigm that will help stem the tide of abuse in South Florida and across the nation.”The bill takes particular aim at Medicare theft in Miami-Dade County, widely regarded as the nation’s capital of healthcare dupery. Medicare dupery in South Florida costs taxpayers between $3 billion and $4 billion every year, according to law enforcement and healthcare officials. Nationwide, Medicare and other healthcare fraud is estimated to cost $68 billion each in very year.

Springhill: Russian and South Korean Scientists Team Up to Clone Woolly Mammoth

http://www.geekosystem.com/russian-south-korean-clone-woolly-mammoth/

Russian and South Korean scientists have agreed upon joint research and signed a deal on intended to recreated the extinct woolly mammoth via the only means (somewhat) currently available when trying to recreate a species that is no more: Cloning.
Hwang Woo-Suk, of South Korea’s Sooam Biotech Research Foundation, and Vasily Vasiliev, vice rector of the North-Eastern Federal University of the Sakha Republic, both signed the deal today. Back in 2005, Hwang created the world’s first cloned dog, Snuppy, though other cloning research of his was found to be faked, so that will probably and unfortunately be an underlying thought throughout the whole woolly mammoth cloning research and experiment.
After global warming thawed Siberia’s permafrost, remains of a woolly mammoth were uncovered, and the process began. Sooam Biotech Research Foundation said they’d begin the research this year if the woolly mammoth remains could be shipped to them in time. Sooam also said it would help out by sending some technology to the Russian University.
Sooam research Hwang In-Sung said the first and hardest step is to restore the mammoth cells, and the scientists would be looking for woolly mammoth tissue with an undamaged gene. The intent is to replace the nuclei of egg cells from an elephant with mammoth cells, which could then be planted into an elephant womb.
Sooam admits the process will be tough, but the researchers feel they’ll be able to achieve the goal, as they have a history of successful clonings, which include a cat, cow, dog, pig, and wolf.

Springhill Group Home: Top 10 Fraud Schemes

Springhill Group Home: Top 10 Fraud Schemes

For the twelfth successive year, identity theft topped the consumer complaint database of the Federal Trade Commission with the largest number of complaints, perhaps owing to the rampant use (and misuse) of online services such as social networking and e-commerce websites.

From the 1.8 million complaints the FTC got in 2011, almost 300,000 are about identity theft. The information of FTC has included complaints filed to them or from other states and federal consumer protection groups.

Most of the complaints of identity theft are coming from consumers saying that their personal details are used in government documents without their knowledge, with scammers aiming to collect benefits. Last year, government-related identity theft was 27% of the total complaints in that category, increasing by 11% since 2009. Accounting for the 14% of identity theft complaints is credit card fraud, with the rest consisting of complaints of bank, utilities and phone fraud.

More than half of all the complaints last year were related to fraud and taxpayers reportedly paid a total of over USD 1.5 billion in fraudulent schemes, with the average amount paid being USD 537. Moreover, 43% of the victims acknowledged that scammers reached them through email messages.
The top three states that have the most per capita rate of fraud reported are Colorado, Delaware and Maryland as first, second and third, respectively.

Generally, FTC discovered that people are either more willing to file complaints or they simply have more complaints now. The total amount of complaints they have received has increased by over 20% -- from 1.5 million to 1.8 million in 2011 -- that includes both identity theft and fraud complaints.

The following is the complete list of FTC's top 10 consumer complaints for the year 2011:
1. Identity theft
2. Debt collection
3. Lotteries, sweepstakes, prizes
4. Catalog sales, shop-at-home,
5. Lenders and Banks
6. Internet services
7. Auto-related complaints
8. Impostor scams
9. Mobile and telephone services
10. Credit protection/repair and advance-fee loans

Springhill Group: FDA: Statins Can Cause Diabetes, Memory Loss

Rate this
We might see changes in the coming months in the way drug companies label their cholesterol-lowering medicines or statins that are being sold nationwide.

Food and Drug Administration is instructing drug firms to include warning in their product labels about the ‘small risk’ of increased sugar levels and diabetes. However, the FDA also said they want to assure the public that those drugs are still providing significant health benefit in lowering cholesterol.

Health regulators are including warning to the medicine labels of popular cholesterol-lowering drugs that they might increase blood sugar and possibly cause memory loss.

FDA has publicized last week that there has been alterations in the safety information labels of statins of Merck & Co’s, AstraZeneca and Pfizer — medicines that are used by millions of Americans.

Statins have long proven that it is effective in reducing the risk of heart attack and other heart disorders and, according to FDA, this new development must not scare people into halting the use of the medicines.

FDA announced that they know of studies wherein several patients taking statins might have an increased risk of having high sugar levels in the blood and, eventually, of being diagnosed with diabetes.

They have apparently known for 4 years now that statin ‘slightly’ increases blood sugar but they are insisting that this does not change that statins are effective in reducing heart risk for patients.

This is the first time that FDA has officially connected the use of statin to cognitive disorders like confusion and forgetfulness, even though several patients have already reported those problems for years. The drugs affected include big brands such as Vytorin, Crestor, Zocor and Lipitor.

The chairman of cardiovascular medicine in Cleveland has said that diabetics and those who acquired diabetes only through ingesting statins must still continue taking the medicines.

According to medical practitioners, even though the benefits of statins can really outweigh the possible side effects, patients might still be alarmed by this new announcement.

Springhill: £5million landmark care centre opens its doors

http://www.springhillcare.com/news/2012/february/5million-landmark-care-centre-opens-its.html

A new £5million specialist care centre has opened its doors in Accrington with a Mayoral seal of approval.
The groundbreaking care centre, at Springhill Care Home, Fairfield Street, is a three storey, 24,000 sq ft development which includes 46 beds over five separate facilities.
It is a separate, dedicated service from the rest of the home with its own entrance, reception areas and specially trained staff designed to provide specialist facilities and care for people with dementia and promotion of mental wellness.
The official opening saw members of staff joined by senior healthcare dignitaries and the Mayor of Hyndburn, Councillor Colette McCormack, who referred to the facility’s “bright, modern look.”
The new care centre brings the number of beds at Springhill Care Home to 110, and is made up of self contained community living suites of between eight and ten beds each.
Each spacious bedroom has private en-suite facilities, including ‘wet room’ style accessible shower areas. Each of the five suites of bedrooms have been created with access to dedicated therapy rooms, lounge, dining and lifestyle kitchen areas for residents
In addition to the care centre, a new extension to the home will also add two, eight-bed facilities for younger adults with complex healthcare requirements including physical disability, brain-injury, neurological and degenerative conditions.
The centre helps to meet changing demands, with the number of people over 85 in the UK predicted to double in the next 20 years. There are expected to be more than a million people with dementia by 2021.
